GRAV was a Paris-based collective of opto-kinetic artists active from 1960 to 1968, founded by Julio Le Parc, François Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, Horacio Garcia-Rossi, Jean-Pierre Yvaral and Joël Stein. Picking up Victor Vasarely's idea that the solitary artistic genius was obsolete, the group dissolved individual authorship into anonymous, collaborative research on perception. Their environments - mirrored labyrinths, shifting light walls, mobile bridges and walk-in structures - asked the viewer not to contemplate but to move, touch and complete the work, an early form of what is now called interactive art. Their 1963 Labyrinth at the Paris Biennale laid out twenty sequential perceptual experiences, and the 1966 street event Une Journée dans la rue staged kinetic play across Paris. Ideologically restless, the group dissolved by common agreement in November 1968.

Defining characteristics
