Heisei retro

also: 平成レトロ

aesthetic c. 2017-present Japan

Heisei retro (平成レトロ) is a Japanese retro aesthetic and fashion trend built on nostalgia for the 1990s and 2000s pop culture of the Heisei era. The term was coined around 2017 by culture researcher Mero Yamashita, and it became a full-blown buzzword in 2022, when social media posts under #平成レトロ multiplied and shops began reviving discontinued goods. It overlaps with the Y2K aesthetic and with gyaru street fashion, and follows the older Shōwa retro vogue. Its look is assembled from the era's analog and early-digital technology - flip phones, disposable cameras, purikura photo booths, Tamagotchi - plus kawaii mascot merchandise, sticker-covered stationery, and candy-colored late-90s fashion. Popular with Millennials who remember the era and Gen Z drawn to it as novelty, Heisei retro turns recent consumer culture into collectible, displayable nostalgia, now staged in dedicated exhibitions and themed shops.
