Late modernism

movement c. 1945-early 21st century United States Europe

In the visual arts, late modernism names the art made between the aftermath of World War II and the early years of the 21st century: the phase in which modernism's core beliefs - formal purity, medium specificity, art for art's sake, the avant-garde's faith in progress - were pushed to their limits and contested. Its terrain runs from Jackson Pollock's abstract expressionism through color field painting, hard-edge abstraction and minimalism to pop art, process art and post-minimalism. Critics from Clement Greenberg to Rosalind Krauss argued over whether this was modernism's last chapter or the first move beyond it, and the boundary with postmodernism remains disputed. The term remains useful because it names the work of artists who kept modernist ambitions alive even as contemporary art moved elsewhere.

Defining characteristics

  • Formal purity and medium specificity: flat, self-referential surfaces that stress the canvas's own materiality
  • All-over gestural abstraction or its opposite - reductive, hard-edged geometric simplicity
  • Process made visible: dripped and poured paint, stained canvas, industrial materials and found objects
  • Seriality and the grid: repeated units, stripes, and modules that suppress traditional composition
  • Monumental scale that fills the viewer's field - color field canvases, room-sized minimal structures
  • The high/low boundary begins to dissolve as pop art embraces advertising and mass culture

Key figures

  • Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) — His radical drip paintings of the late 1940s and 1950s redefined how art gets made
  • Mark Rothko (1903-1970) — Color field painter whose luminous rectangles pursued the sublime in pure chromatic fields
  • Donald Judd (1928-1994) — Minimalism pioneer whose specific objects stripped sculpture of illusion and composition
  • Frank Stella (1936-2024) — Hard-edge and shaped-canvas painter bridging late modernism and minimalism
