Shaped canvas

technique c. 1960-present United States Europe

A shaped canvas is any painting whose support departs from the flat rectangle - by altering its outline, by gaining a three-dimensional surface, or both. Round tondos and Charles Willson Peale's door-shaped The Staircase Group (1795) were early precedents, but the term belongs to New York after about 1960, when Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, Ellsworth Kelly and others made the stretcher's shape part of the picture itself. In 1964 the Guggenheim's exhibition The Shaped Canvas, curated by Lawrence Alloway, canonized the approach. The painted form and the physical edge coincide: composition is dictated by the frame, color stays flat and hard-edged, and the object leans toward sculpture without giving up its identity as painting. Post-painterly painters embraced it to reject both Abstract Expressionist theatrics and the ritual rectangle, opening painting to real space.

Defining characteristics

  • The support departs from the flat rectangle: irregular, polygonal, curved, or open outlines
  • The stretcher edge becomes the composition's contour - picture shape and painted form coincide
  • Flat, hard-edged color fields with little or no visible brushwork
  • Trompe-l'oeil painted edges and banding that wrap around the shaped frame
  • Raised or relief surfaces that push the canvas toward three-dimensional sculpture
  • Coolly abstract, geometric, minimal character - reaction against Abstract Expressionist drama

Key figures

  • Frank Stella (1936-2024) — Made the shaped and irregular polygon canvas a central issue of 1960s painting
  • Kenneth Noland (1924-2010) — Chevron, diamond, and stripe canvases whose geometry is set by the support's shape
  • Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015) — Shaped, monochrome panels that reduce painting to pure contour and color

Example works

  • The Staircase Group — Charles Willson Peale (1795)
  • Three Flags — Jasper Johns (1958)
  • Concetto Spaziale, Attese — Lucio Fontana (1959)
