The Wuming Painting Collective (No Name Painting Association) was an underground counter-culture art collective formed in Beijing in 1969. Some thirteen artists, aged between sixteen and thirty, painted non-political subjects - landscapes, city scenes, still lifes, portraits of friends - on small, easily concealed sheets of paper and cardboard, showing the work only to trusted companions. As the first self-organized art collective of the Cultural Revolution, when official art was pure political propaganda and art for art's sake was forbidden, the Wuming staged a quiet rebellion through apolitical painting done en plein air in parks, streets, and apartments. The group held its first clandestine private exhibition in 1974 in artist Zhang Wei's Beijing apartment, and in spring 1979 staged the first public exhibition of unofficial art in China, in Beihai Park.
