Yaroslavl school of icon painting

also: Yaroslavl school

school 17th-early 18th century Yaroslavl Russia

The Yaroslavl school was the great tradition of icon and fresco painting that flourished in the merchant city of Yaroslavl on the Volga, above all in the seventeenth century. Merchant families such as the Skripins and Nezhdanovskys funded churches whose interiors were covered floor to ceiling with mural ensembles, and Yaroslavl painters - working alongside visiting Kostroma masters such as Gury Nikitin and Sila Savin - carried the style across Russia. Their art joined the strict Byzantine-derived canon of Russian icon painting to a love of ornament: lush floral borders, gilded carved iconostases, glazed-tile friezes, and lively scenes of everyday life among the sacred narratives. The frescoes of the Church of Elijah the Prophet (1680) and the Church of John the Baptist in Tolchkovo (1694-1695) rank among the masterpieces of Russian mural art.
